FAQ Counsellors

BEFORE YOUR PLACEMENT

The camps 2025 start on the 28th of June and end after 8 camp weeks on the 23rd of August. You are free to choose the duration and start date of your employment.

As a native English speaker you can work in the English Action Camp in Radstadt or the English 4 Fun Camp in Obertauern. The camp to which you will be allocated depends on your availability and the number of weeks you work.
If you are interested in working in other camps and your German skills are good enough, you will find more information about other camps HERE.

Your salary depends on the length of your employment and your previous experience in the camp field. Pay typically ranges from €250 to €525 net per week. You'll receive more detailed information about your salary in the job info document after you apply.

Camp manager positions are usually filled by our Oldies who have worked with us before. However, if you have prior experience in camp settings and have held a leadership role with another organisation, we’d be happy to consider you for the role.

The minimum age for counsellors is 18. There is no maximum age, but we have experienced that a big age differences within a team can sometimes be challenging. As a result, we aim to create teams that are similar in age. Most of our counsellors are between 18 and 30 years old.

It is generally possible to work together in the camp, and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes. However, this depends on your availability and the need for counsellors during that time. Please note that each of you must submit a separate application.

Generally, we can only obtain a work permit for non-EU citizens if they have specific qualifications that are not available within the Austrian job market. If you are a native English speaker from a non-EU country such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc. we will be able to organise a work permit for you provided that you are allowed to stay in Austria during the entire time of your employment.
If these qualifications are not met, it is very unlikely that we will be able to secure a work permit for non-EU citizens.

If your income remains below the Austrian low-income threshold, you will be provided with accident insurance. If you work for us for more than two weeks, you will be fully insured. This also includes medical insurance, pension provision and
unemployment insurance.
All our counsellors are covered by liability insurance through young austria.

For your assignment in our camps, you will need a criminal record certificate (DBS in the UK) that is no older than 3 months. Depending on your country of residence, the process of applying for a criminal background check may differ. Once you have received a concrete job offer from us, we will provide you with further information on how to obtain the appropriate background check (e.g., police certificate, DBS check, etc.).
The cost of the background check will be reimbursed after your assignment is completed. Please make sure to keep the receipt!

We require all of our camp counsellors to have at least basic first aid knowledge, and we strongly recommend refreshing your skills with a first aid course before the start of the camp. If you complete a self-organised first aid course before your assignment in 2025, you will receive a maximum reimbursement of €50.

The counsellor seminar for our native speakers who start their employment in week 1 will take place from Thursday, 26th of June to Friday, 27th of June in Radstadt.
For everyone starting in week 5, there will be another counsellor training from Thursday, 24th of July to Friday, 25th of July in Obertauern. Everyone else arriving at a different time in the summer will receive their training 2 days before the start of their employment.
The counsellor training aims to prepare you for work at camp and involves various workshops on relevant topics such as group leading skills, planning camp activities as well as child safeguarding and lesson planning. The counsellor training is mandatory for all new counsellors.

DURING YOUR PLACEMENT

As a counsellor in the English camp, you will plan and organise the sports and leisure programme at the camp and teach English to your own group of 10-14 participants. You will accompany the participants on exciting excursions and you will be responsible for the well-being of the children and young people at all times. As a room counsellor, you will look after a small group of camp participants – you will be their personal mentor who they will turn to if they have any problems or experience homesickness. On arrival and departure days, you may also be responsible for assisting with bus arrivals and departures, accompanying participants by bus to Innsbruck. Your responsibilities in camp may change each week – one week you may teach English whereas another week your main responsibilities may be planning and organising the sports and
leisure programme in camp.

As a counsellor, you will be responsible for the well-being of the camp participants at all times, but you will also have designated break times and enough time off to relax and recharge your batteries. In each week, you will have at least 3 half-days off, and you will also have sufficient break times during the day. Your camp week begins on Saturday at 3:00 PM and ends the following Saturday at 3:00 PM, once all participants have departed, bus supervision is complete, and the end-of-camp preparations have been finished.

As a supervisor, you will not only accompany participants on organised excursions but also actively take part in the activities. Whether it's rafting, canyoning, or the high ropes course, participation is encouraged so you can best support the participants during the activity. However, if you have a fear of heights, you will not be forced to take part in the high ropes course. Instead, you can take on other tasks, such as looking after children who have finished the activity or those who cannot participate.

You will need to arrange your own trip to camp and back home. Depending on how many weeks you work with us, we will cover most of your travel expenses. The closest airports to camp are in Salzburg and Munich. From there you can book a train to get to Radstadt where the camp takes place. We will provide you with more information about travel cost reimbursement and how to travel to camp once you have a definite job offer.

As a counsellor, you will typically be accommodated in a shared room (2 single beds) with another counsellor from your team. Accommodation and meals are provided free of charge for the entire duration of your employment as well as the counsellor training.

The wellbeing and safety of all our camp participants is our top priority. In collaboration with the specialist agency Selbstbewusst in Salzburg, we have developed our own child safeguarding policy, which we evaluate and update annually. As a counsellor, you will receive in-depth training on child safeguarding during the counsellor seminar.
