FAQ Counsellors

BEFORE YOUR PLACEMENT

The English language Camps 2026 start on the 4th of July and end after 8 camp weeks on the 29th of August. You are free to choose the duration and start date of your employment.

As a native English speaker you can work at the English Action Camp in Radstadt. Based on your previous work experience and your own personal preferences you can either work as an English teacher or as an Activity Leader.
If you are interested in working in other camps and your German skills are good enough, you will find more information about our other camps HERE.

You do not need to be a fully qualified English teacher to apply. We are looking for motivated young people with a genuine passion for teaching—ideally those who are studying education or have already gained some first teaching experience in similar settings. At camp, English Teachers take on a varied role: in addition to teaching, they accompany children on excursions, help plan engaging language-based evening activities, and support the children in everyday camp life.

Your salary depends on the length of your employment and your previous experience in the camp field. Pay typically ranges from €250 to €525 net per week. You'll receive more detailed information about your salary in the job info document after you apply.

Camp manager positions are usually filled by our Oldies who have worked with us before. However, if you have prior experience in camp settings and have held a leadership role with another organisation, we’d be happy to consider you for the role.

The minimum age for counsellors is 18. There is no maximum age, but we have experienced that big age differences within a team can sometimes be challenging. As a result, we aim to create teams that are similar in age. Most of our counsellors are between 18 and 30 years old.

It is generally possible to work together in the camp, and we will do our best to accommodate your wishes. However, this depends on your availability and the need for counsellors during that time. Please note that each of you must submit a separate application.

Generally, we can only obtain a work permit for non-EU citizens if they have specific qualifications that are not available within the Austrian job market. If you are a native English speaker from a non-EU country such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc. we will be able to organise a work permit for you provided that you are allowed to stay in Austria during the entire time of your employment.
If these qualifications are not met, it is very unlikely that we will be able to secure a work permit for non-EU citizens.

If your income remains below the Austrian low-income threshold, you will be provided with accident insurance. If you work for us for more than two weeks, you will be fully insured. This also includes medical insurance, pension provision and
unemployment insurance.
All our counsellors are covered by liability insurance through young austria.

For your assignment in our camps, you will need a criminal record certificate (DBS in the UK) that is no older than 3 months. Depending on your country of residence, the process of applying for a criminal background check may differ. Once you have received a concrete job offer from us, we will provide you with further information on how to obtain the appropriate background check (e.g., police certificate, DBS check, etc.).
The cost of the background check will be reimbursed after your assignment is completed. Please make sure to keep the receipt!

We require all of our camp counsellors to have at least basic first aid knowledge, and we strongly recommend refreshing your skills with a first aid course before the start of the camp. If you complete a self-organised first aid course before your assignment in 2026, you will receive a maximum reimbursement of €50.

The online counsellor training will be held in April and May, with full details shared after you receive your job offer. The Onboarding Days take place on-site on the Thursday and Friday before your first camp week, giving you time to prepare and settle into your role before camp begins.

DURING YOUR PLACEMENT

As a camp counsellor, you work as an English Teacher or Activity Leader, both playing a key role in creating a safe, supportive, and unforgettable camp experience for children and teens. English Teachers plan and deliver engaging English lessons, motivate learners to use English confidently, and take part in evening activities and excursions. Activity Leaders organise and lead sports and leisure activities, accompany participants on trips, and ensure the safety and well-being of the children throughout the camp. All counsellors act as role models, follow camp procedures, and work closely with the team to support the children in all aspects of camp life.

As a counsellor, you will be responsible for the well-being of the camp participants at all times, but you will also have designated break times and enough time off to relax and recharge your batteries. In each week, you will have at least 3 half-days off, and you will also have sufficient break times during the day. Your camp week begins on Saturday at 3:00 PM and ends the following Saturday at 3:00 PM, once all participants have departed, bus supervision is complete, and the end-of-camp preparations have been finished.

Yes! Both English Teachers and Activity Leaders accompany participants on organised excursions and are encouraged to actively take part in the activities. Whether it’s rafting, canyoning, or the high ropes course, joining in helps you support and motivate the participants throughout the experience. If you are unable to take part in a specific activity (for example, due to a fear of heights), you will not be required to do so and can instead support the group by supervising children who have finished the activity or are unable to participate.

You will need to arrange your own trip to camp and back home. Depending on how many weeks you work with us, we will cover most of your travel expenses. The closest airports to camp are in Salzburg and Munich. From there you can book a train to get to Radstadt where the camp takes place. We will provide you with more information about travel cost reimbursement and how to travel to camp once you have a definite job offer.

As a counsellor, you will typically be accommodated in a shared room (2 single beds) with another counsellor from your team. Accommodation and meals are provided free of charge for the entire duration of your employment as well as the counsellor training.

The wellbeing and safety of all our camp participants is our top priority. In collaboration with the specialist agency Selbstbewusst in Salzburg, we have developed our own child safeguarding policy, which we evaluate and update annually. As a counsellor, you will receive in-depth training on child safeguarding during the counsellor seminar.
